Taking a Hands-On Approach to Creating a More Reliable Export Supply Chain

By: Erik Sunderbruch

Recently, members of our export supply chain teams spent a full day on-site at the Port of Oakland meeting directly with terminal operators, port officials, and logistics partners. The goal was simple: identify tangible ways to reduce costs, improve service reliability, and ensure product moves efficiently from our facilities to its final destination. During the visit, the team met with key terminal operators including Everport Terminal Services, SSA Marine, and TraPac to better understand current operations, constraints, and upcoming initiatives impacting port activity and global shipping.

This direct engagement provided valuable insight into how to stay ahead of potential congestion and delays, identify faster and more reliable gate access strategies, and better align shipping patterns with terminal best practices. Beyond improving day-to-day coordination, the visit also advanced our broader efforts to reduce total landed cost across the end-to-end supply chain, not just freight rates, but the full cost of moving product efficiently.

Several initiatives discussed during the visit are aimed at creating long-term efficiencies and measurable savings, including optimized container strategies to reduce total delivered cost per pound and improved coordination with terminals to help minimize wait times and avoid unnecessary fees. Equally important, the discussions reinforced opportunities to improve execution and predictability throughout the export process.

By continuing to strengthen relationships with port and terminal teams, Morning Star is enhancing appointment scheduling, truck turn times, increasing visibility into container flows and potential disruptions, and creating more proactive communication channels to resolve issues quickly when challenges arise. The result is a more controlled and dependable supply chain designed to help ensure products arrive on time while reducing costs

Our approach remains hands-on and continuous. By investing time directly at the port and working closely with key logistics partners, we continue building a logistics network that is more cost-efficient, more reliable, and better aligned with the needs of our customers around the world.
