Understanding the Tomato Landscape: Our annual review of the forces influencing California and global processing tomatoes.

Part 2: Water Outlook in California

Each year, we pause to take a broader view of the processing tomato industry – looking beyond day-to-day decisions to better understand the forces shaping each season. This annual long-format video series brings together perspectives from across the supply chain to place recent production years in a wider industry context. Structured as a three-part release, each episode explores a different factor influencing today’s tomato landscape. New installments are shared weekly, beginning with Part 1 on February 3, offering a thoughtful look at how past seasons connect to current conditions and the dynamics that continue to influence what lies ahead.

In Part 2, we turn our focus to water – one of the most defining variables for California agriculture. From statewide snowpack and reservoir conditions to groundwater recharge efforts and the ongoing implementation of SGMA, this section looks at how water availability and regulation continue to shape farming decisions across the state. Rather than focusing on any single metric, the goal is to understand how these factors work together and what they mean for long-term stability in California’s processing tomato industry.
