Processed tomato seed supply insecurity will not affect Morning Star anticipated crop acres.

With seed imports from China under restriction, concerns over supply have been voiced throughout the processed tomato industry. Last year’s sourcing insecurity from China set plans in motion far before the 2021 seed sowing deadlines of January and February.

California supplies were better positioned this year by companies either bringing seed in earlier and placing in inventory or increased efficiencies in planning. Morning Star’s factories and field departments have also taken additional measures to head-off these restrictions.

Although Morning Star’s growers will not receive all the varieties they would prefer to plant, requirements for high producing varieties resistant to Fusarium Race 3 wilt will be met. With no interruptions in greenhouse seed sowing, total anticipated acres are expected to be planted.
