In 1995 under the guidance and leadership
of The Morning Star Company, a group of individuals involved in the business of
growing, trucking and processing tomatoes formed California Sun Harvesting Company
(Cal-Sun). It was their common goal to increase the efficiency of harvesting,
trucking and processing the tomato crop. The immediate objective being the reduction
of cost at all levels thereby making sure the realization of the ultimate objective
of increased profitability to the grower.
Cal-Sun's staff are dedicated professionals who work toward the goals of the year-round
tracking of harvesting efficiencies, incorporating new harvesting strategies,
developing labor saving strategies, making equipment modifications to improve
fruit recovery, increase tons per hour, and reduce repair costs. When it comes
to harvester repair and maintenance, they are always pushing manufacturers to
strengthen and innovate in delivering a machine that can harvest more tons with
less down time.
Cal-Sun contracts its services to the grower-customers, providing modern harvesters
with the most advanced electronic sorting equipment available. Cal-Sun owns and
operates both FMC and Johnson tomato harvesters. All harvesters are equipped with
radar measuring devices to allow to track speed of harvest and acres harvested
per load. Information is relayed verbally by radio to a centralized dispatch-data
entry location. The dispatcher generates load documentation that is passed on
to the trucking company within minutes of a completed load. We are able to use
this data to track both tons per acre and tons per hour and pass this information
along to field personnel and grower-customers. Our close contact with trucking
and the canneries allows us to give and receive faster feedback to and from the
fields of any changes in variety and load count adjustments.
Our goals are to lead in technology, continue to reduce the cost of harvesting,
increase our grower-customers profitability, and create an even flow of tomatoes
to the canneries. Since 1995, we have continually shown increased throughput (tonnage)
per machine, increased tons per hour, and reduced the cost of harvesting to our
grower-customers.
We would like to thank our grower-customers for their pioneering efforts in joining
hands with us in a true partnership to reduce costs and increase efficiency in
our mutual business of growing, harvesting, trucking and processing California
processing tomatoes.
